Aims And Objectives
The Scottish Safety Camera Programme is an evidence-based road safety initiative which aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on roads in Scotland by changing driver behaviour and by ensuring drivers are aware of the dangers of excessive and inappropriate speed.
It is a key part of the Scottish Government Road Safety Strategy which aims by 2010 to:
- REDUCE the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads by 40 percent;
- REDUCE the number of children killed or seriously injured by 50 percent;
- REDUCE the casualty rate for slight injuries by 10 percent
(compared with the average for 1994-98).
Safety cameras are an integral element of this strategy.
Communication activity undertaken by partnerships and engaging the media is a key tool in helping to achieve this.
