Safety Cameras Cut Crashes

Safety Cameras Cut Crashes. The latest statistics revealed by Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership show that safety cameras have dramatically reduced serious collisions at camera sites across the region.
Analysis of collisions across all of the roads in Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and West Lothian has been on going since 2000 and research shows that the most serious collisions that result in people being killed or seriously injured are down by 8% across these areas. However, on roads where there are safety cameras, collisions have been cut by 43%, a difference of 35%. Similarly, all personal injury collisions are down by 31% at camera sites compared against the local trend reduction of 16%.
The statistics confirm that the deployment of safety cameras at locations with a history of collisions and speeding is improving road safety. What were the regions most dangerous roads are now experiencing a significant reduction in casualties.
Superintendent Phil O'Kane, Chair of Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership welcomed the news and said:
"To hear that collisions in our region are falling is always heart warming news and also that the most serious of collisions have reduced by such a large figure at safety camera sites is just fantastic. These statistics show that cameras are an excellent tool in the road safety box and it puts an end to the arguemnt that cameras are just revenue raisers. They save lives".
